This is a nice study showing that a pistachio diet for 3 weeks can reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL), elevate high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and improve erectile function.
The authors demonstrated that a diet of 100g per day of pistachio nuts for 3 weeks is able to reduce LDL, elevate HDL and improve International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF)-15 score (from 36 to 54). Although the study did not have a placebo arm, these findings add to the current knowledge of beneficial effects of nuts in lowering cholesterol. However, we should be cautious of suggesting nuts to our patients since most of the nuts available in the supermarkets contain high levels of salt.Competing interests: No potential interests relevant to this article were reported.
