"When tumor cells develop in the breast in response to MPA, they encourage new blood vessels to form within tumors. The blood vessels then supply needed nutrients for the tumors to grow and multiply. Hyder found that apigenin blocked new blood vessel formation, thereby delaying, and sometimes stopping, the development of the tumors. Hyder also found that the compound reduced the overall number of tumors. However, while apigenin did delay tumor growth, it did not stop the initial formation of cancer cells within the breast.

Apigenin is most prevalent in parsley and celery, but can also be found in apples, oranges, nuts and other plant products. However, apigenin is not absorbed efficiently into the bloodstream, so scientists are unsure of how much can or should be ingested."

This is a nice study showing that a pistachio diet for 3 weeks can reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL), elevate high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and improve erectile function.

The authors demonstrated that a diet of 100g per day of pistachio nuts for 3 weeks is able to reduce LDL, elevate HDL and improve International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF)-15 score (from 36 to 54). Although the study did not have a placebo arm, these findings add to the current knowledge of beneficial effects of nuts in lowering cholesterol. However, we should be cautious of suggesting nuts to our patients since most of the nuts available in the supermarkets contain high levels of salt.

As revistas internacionais chamam-lhe cidade do futuro. Mas o que os promotores do PlanIT Valley, um projecto anunciado para Paredes, estão a tentar fazer é construir de raiz uma cidade para 225 mil pessoas com uma pegada ecológica próxima do zero, que integre as soluções para muitos dos problemas urbanos do presente. Mais de metade da população mundial vive actualmente em cidades, e a sustentabilidade do planeta depende, e muito, das respostas aos desafios associados à sustentabilidade ambiental. O que a Living PlanIT, uma empresa liderada por um ex-executivo da Microsoft, Steve Lewis, se propõe desenvolver é uma espécie de cidade-laboratório onde se desenvolvam e testem soluções. Uma cidade-catálogo, montra de tecnologias, bens e serviços exportáveis para o mundo.
A concretizarem-se os anúncios que têm vindo a ser feitos pela Living PlanIT, será a vinte quilómetros do Porto que vai aparecer um laboratório vivo onde novas soluções tecnológicas irão ser desenvolvidas e testadas, ao nível da construção de edifícios, da mobilidade, da produção e gestão da energia, do tratamento e reaproveitamento de resíduos... tudo controlado por uma gigantesca rede de sensores (fala-se em cem milhões) que permitem, além disso, monitorizar a qualidade de vida dos habitantes, e trazer interactividade à vida.A relação do habitante com esta cidade não seria muito diferente daquela que, individualmente, cada cidadão pode ter com o seu smartphone. O que se fala para Paredes é isso, uma smart city. Uma cidade inteligente que, segundo Celso Ferreira, o presidente da Câmara de Paredes, que abriu os braços a este projecto, não poderia ser desenvolvido em nenhuma metrópole já consolidada. "Nenhum condomínio iria permitir, de repente, a instalação de sensores... e aqui estamos a falar à escala de quarteirões e de cidade. Aqui estamos a começar do zero, e só vem para cá quem aceita estes princípios que, obviamente, não deixarão de respeitar todas as questões legais", explica o autarca.
Trata-se, pois, de construir uma cidade de raiz, com Celso Ferreira a garantir o cumprimento dos critérios de ordenamento do território nacional. "Não vamos repetir, em Paredes, os erros que foram feitos no passado, um pouco por todo o país", assegura. O responsável do projecto, Steve Lewis, garante também ter a preocupação de construir em Portugal algo que não seja "desgarrado da realidade e da cultura portuguesa". Por isso, assegura, chamou o gabinete de arquitectura Balonas e Menano a desenhar o plano de implantação da cidade. "Um gabinete de topo, com soluções inovadoras e criativas", assevera Lewis.
Pedro Balonas agradece a oportunidade de estar "a integrar uma rede de conhecimento". "Temos estado em contacto com um impressionante número de empresas, e a trabalhar em soluções que nos atiram para os lugares de topo, a nível mundial", afirma, entusiasmado, o arquitecto. A Balonas e Menano é parceira e investidora: é o gabinete de arquitectura que está a suportar os custos de investigação nestes processos, onde actualmente estão a trabalhar, afirma Pedro Balonas, 20 pessoas.
Este é o conceito que foi tornado público, e o modelo de negócio que o sustenta: as empresas interessadas em desenvolver tecnologia e soluções, nas mais variadas áreas, como materiais científicos, técnicas de construção, engenharia mecânica, indústria automóvel, software, electrónica, etc, são convidadas a integrar um "ecossistema" de parcerias, tornando-se elas próprias investidoras. "O parceiro da Living PlanIT terá necessariamente de se instalar na PlanIT Valley, e levar os seus funcionários para testar as soluções e desenvolvê-las ali. E depois vendê-las", explica Steve Lewis.
Moradores chegam este ano
Conceito conhecido e publicado, tudo o resto permanece no segredo dos deuses. E nos últimos dois anos tem-se assistido a uma sucessão de números e anúncios, relativamente às empresas envolvidas e contactadas, e ao avanço, no terreno, desta construção.
Ao Cidades, Steve Lewis avança as mais recentes. Até ao fim deste mês, inicio do próximo, deverão começar a ser adquiridas algumas parcelas de terreno (os 17 quilómetros quadrados reservados para o projecto são propriedade privada). E até ao fim do ano poderão começar a chegar os primeiros dos oito mil novos habitantes (entre funcionários de empresas e seus familiares). Lewis garante que já mais de 900 empresas visitaram Portugal nos últimos dois anos, e que nos próximos cinco é muito provável que se instalem em Portugal 1300 "pequenas, médias e grandes" firmas das mais diversas áreas de actuação.
O investimento previsto para a execução deste projecto chega aos dez mil milhões de euros, para dotar esta smart city da capacidade de atrair, directa ou indirectamente, cerca de 12 mil empresas do sector tecnológico e criar cerca de 20.000 empregos. Para a concretização do projecto, não há datas. Os compromissos, para já, circunscrevem-se ao que chama a Fase 1: um investimento de cerca de 500 milhões de euros, só para a parte da construção e das infra-estruturas numa área de 37 hectares. A componente tecnológica - nomeadamente o Centro de Inovação Global para Sensores de Redes e a respectiva rede de sensores a instalar pela Cisco Systems, custarão mais 200 milhões.
Steve Lewis esbanja elogios para todos os protagonistas portugueses que, a dada altura, tomaram contacto e decisões relativamente ao projecto, que anda a ser trabalhado e pensado desde 2007. Começa na Comissão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento da Região Norte (CCDRN), que acompanhou o projecto, e segue para a agência para a promoção do investimento (AICEP) e para o seu presidente, Basílio Horta. A primeira pelo auxílio do trabalho técnico, o segundo por ter dado "um apoio soberbo", e ter uma visão" muito prática, muito focada".
O presidente da Living PlanIT prossegue os elogios para o Governo português, que, alega, fez "o que se espera para um projecto deste tipo: saiu do caminho, não atrapalhou". Mas, acrescenta o presidente executivo da Living PlanIT, fez exigências que permitiram melhorar o projecto, em termos de incorporação nacional, de criação de postos de trabalho.
Segundo a AICEP, o projecto PlanIT Valley garantiu a dinamização de um cluster regional de PME da area tecnológica. Como contrapartida, terá facilidades administrativas e fiscais que merece um empreendimento com o selo PIN - Projecto de Interesse Nacional, concedido em Setembro de 2009. Questionada pelo Cidades, fonte oficial da AICEP sublinhou o carácter inovador do projecto, acreditando que os parceiros que já foram anunciados publicamente pelos promotores, e que são liderados pela Cisco, lhe conferem a "credibilidade" que poderá tornar possível o seu sucesso.
O maior dos elogios dispensados por Steve Lewis vai, no entanto, para o autarca de Paredes: "Não há muitos Celsos Ferreiras no mundo, homens com esta visão", argumenta. Para Lewis, "uma das maiores vantagens de Portugal é o facto de os autarcas terem poderes de decisão, de facto". "E isso não acontece em muitos outros países", assegura.
O que é que Paredes tem?
O presidente da Câmara de Paredes relata a "conquista" deste projecto para Portugal como algo que foi muito trabalhado, e que resultou de uma prospecção de indústrias que pudessem instalar-se no concelho e diversificar a oferta produtiva, muito concentrada no mobiliário. "Encetámos contactos com a indústria automóvel, queríamos trazer para o concelho indústrias de nicho. Foi aí que chegámos a Miguel Rodrigues, o autor do Vinci GT", explica o autarca, referindo-se ao carro desportivo que foi desenvolvido no Centro para a Excelência e Inovação da Industria Automóvel (CEIIA), instalado no TecMaia. O carro não chegou à produção industrial, mas em vez de perder uma fábrica, Paredes acabou de ganhar a promessa de "uma cidade".
A Living PlanIT portuguesa é uma empresa com sede na Maia, da qual Miguel Rodrigues é sócio, e que tem como sócio maioritário Steve Lewis. A informação disponibilizada no Portal de Justiça revela uma empresa constituída com cinco mil euros de capital, tendo como actividade os "serviços de diversão e recreio", e com apenas um funcionário. Lewis diz ao PÚBLICO que, na fase actual, os funcionários são já 130, e que a maior parte deles trabalha em Portugal. "Mas o número de pessoas que, de alguma forma, está a trabalhar neste projecto, numa base diária, em todo o mundo, chega já às 2000", assegura.
O líder do PlanIT Valley sublinha que não está à frente de uma empresa de imobiliária, nem de uma empresa de construção - "a Living planIT é uma empresa que desenvolve tecnologias inovadoras, e sustentáveis, à escala urbana", define - mas que chamou algumas das líderes mundiais destes sectores para a rede de parceiros. Por um lado, celebrou um acordo com a Quintain, uma empresa do sector imobiliário que está a desenvolver projectos de regeneração urbana no centro de Londres e que investe muito na investigação e desenvolvimento de novas urbes. Por outro, tem também como parceiro a BuroHappold, uma importante empresa de engenharia, que está a desenvolver projectos de construção em vários pontos do globo.
"A nossa preocupação foi captar o interesse destas grandes empresas internacionais, que, pela sua capacidade e liderança, servirão como âncora para atrair outras empresas", afirma Steve Lewis. Apesar de varias tentativas, o PÚBLICO não encontrou empresas nem funcionários disponíveis para revelar as frentes em que estão a trabalhar. O segredo é a alma do negócio, e o momento actual, garante Lewis, é o do sprint final: "Está muita gente a correr para a meta, ao mesmo tempo".
Celso Ferreira explicou ao PÚBLICO que para evitar possíveis especulações dos proprietários, tem três localizações distintas por onde o projecto pode avançar. "Já há negociações no terreno, e a estratégia é a de que, quando percebermos em qual das três localizações é mais vantajoso, economicamente, avançar, iniciamos as transacções", justifica. O município ainda não fez nenhuma compra, mas já tem um empréstimo negociado. "É a Agência Municipal quem compra o terreno, e depois é ressarcida pela Living PlanIT desse valor", explica o autarca. Que valor? Celso Ferreira diz que não pode dizer, "por razões óbvias".
Óbvia também é a dificuldade de concretizar um projecto com esta envergadura e este grau de integração dos parceiros a envolver. Mas o certo é que, se os planos de Lewis e dos que o acompanham ultrapassarem o entusiasmo que o inglês coloca em cada palavra, para se tornarem, de facto, uma cidade, haverá em Portugal um sítio onde o planeta pode observar propostas para novas formas de trabalhar, habitar, num mesmo espaço. Um lugar em que, por exemplo, os computadores nos ajudarão nas tarefas diárias, dizendo-nos para o telemóvel que a loja por onde estamos a passar, no caminho a pé para o trabalho, tem o produto que nos falta num armário da despensa de casa. E este serviço até já está a ser trabalhado, como solução a comercializar, por uma empresa portuguesa, assinala um não menos entusiasmado presidente da Câmara de Paredes. My seed fund management company (Maverick), which is currently managing SeedCapital (a portuguese YCombinator clone), is organizing the 3rd edition of Kickstart, a workshop that we run every semester to help projects and ideas go into the startup phase and, hopefully, to choose some of them for investment.

In the past editions we have been pretty happy with the number of candidates, the number of selected teams and the number of projects with investment potential (see here and here). As for the current edition we have received zero proposals. Zero.

I’m currently teaching Entrepreneurship at the portuguese Catholic University and in one of the sessions we discussed the level of risk aversion in Portugal and the level of entrepreneurship. My students were very perplexed by this apparent paradox: Portugal is one of the top entrepreneurial countries; but its also one of the most risk averse.

Out comes the academic in me to provide literature supporting the argument…

Some years back, Geert Hofstede made a study of several countries’ characteristics, including risk aversion. At the time Guatemala was the most risk averse country and Portugal was second. The current version of the study shows that Guatemala got better and is now in 3rd place while Greece is now the most risk averse country in the world. Portugal? Still in second place.

Strangely enough, whereas Greece’s entrepreneurial level (52nd place) is consistent with its risk aversion level, Portugal is on the Top 25 Most Entrepreneurial countries in the world. Paradox? Not really.

Portuguese are quite entrepreneurial but are still risk averse. They are quite disposed and able to become their own bosses. But their entrepreneurial spirit is focused on creating small businesses and lifestyle businesses: a restaurant, a clothing shop, a bar, a hairdresser salon, a newsstand, a consulting/freelance job, etc. Something that basically doesnt defy the status quo, something that is safe, something that wont shock friends and family and that assures that one doesnt deviate from the norm. Portuguese are still provincial, they are rather happy to create businesses that are focused on our small country and that just provide living expenses. They are still uncapable of thinking with a European (or worldwide) focus. They are still uncapable of thinking big, of having a chance to make millions.

As for the start of this article, regarding Kickstart and the number of candidates, I guess that the small company, the on-the-side project, both usually complemented by a “real” job or a consulting gig providing “safety” (and most of all social approval), are the nowadays version of the hairdresser salon.

"Four years ago, Harvard scientists devised a way to make mouse neurons glow in a breathtaking array of colors, a technique dubbed “Brainbow.” This allowed scientists to trace neurons’ long arms, known as the dendrites and axons, through the brain with incredible ease, revealing a map of neuron connections.
Using a clever trick of genetic engineering, in which genes for three or more different fluorescent proteins were combined like paints to generate different hues, researchers created a system to make each neuron glow one of 100 different colors. The result was that the dendrites and axons of individual neurons, previously almost impossible to pick apart from their neighbors, could be traced through the mouse brain according to their color.
Now, fruit fly researchers have a similar bonanza on their hands. Last week, two Brainbow-based methods for making fly neurons glow customized colors—called dBrainbow and Flybow—were published in Nature Methods. This is the first time that scientists have converted the technique to work in fruit flies, and because these organisms have a very sophisticated set of existing genetic tools, researchers can exert even greater control over when and where the fluorescent proteins are expressed.
Because axons and dendrites are so long and fine, it's hard to tell which neurons they are from. Researchers have traditionally had to stain just one or two neurons in each sample, painstakingly compiling data from many brains to build a map. In contrast, many neurons are easily discernible in this cross-section of a fly’s brain made using dBrainbow. Using dBrainbow images, Julie H. Simpson and colleagues at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Janelia Farm could tell which motor neurons controlled parts of a fly's proboscis, which it uses to take in food."

The previous quote was something that one of my Lecturers at Uni, Jorge Martins, used to say quite often.

It is important not to be too glib about this idea. Certain cancers are caused largely by preventable exposures to carcinogens or viruses. Lung cancer is directly linked to smoking. Liver cancer has been long associated with inflammation and repair in liver cells caused by hepatitis B and C virus. Cervical cancer is often caused by a sexually transmitted papilloma virus. These cancers do not arise accidentally or "naturally", but are caused by particular behaviours or exposures that can be modified and changed.

But for many other cancers – many types of breast or prostate cancer, for example – there is no identifiable or modifiable risk aside from age itself. These cancers seem to arise not because we have exposed ourselves to a known chemical or behaviour, but because our genes themselves are vulnerable. Our cells divide as we age, and there are errors in copying genes from one division to the next. As mutant genes encrust upon mutant genes in our bodies, our cells are inevitably tugged towards uncontrollable growth – cancer.

A "wake-up call"

Yesterday I went to an interview in Manchester.

I went with a bit of fear of the unknown. The project is to work in the subject of Breast Cancer, Sponsored in part by the Breakthrough.

In preparation for the interview I have looked for the meet the team section in the Breakthrough Charity website because the job offer document did not mention who was the PI.

I have also asked the secretary who was going to interview me: Anthony Howell, Michael Lisanti, Rob Clarke and Goran Landberg.

I have made my background check on all of them and read a couple of papers from each. And I was scared. I was scared because all of them are well reputed scientist with a track record that some of us (scientist) can only dream of.

I had to make a presentation about my work, I decided to take the talk I gave last year at the BSG (no not the Battle Star Galactica meeting). I though I was going to be under pressure, as my work is only a drop compared to the ocean of papers my interviewers have. Plus the fact that I come from intestinal tissue and only briefly related to cancer.

Well I was pleasantly surprised that every thing went smooth. All the questions, the answers. I discovered that the "boss" would be Michael Lisanti, and at some point he even said that with my background I would be the ideal person. You always distrust such remarks, there is no way to tell if this is just to make you fell good or if it is a real assessment. The ideal candidate remark should be because I have a background in oxidative stress, I know epithelial tissue biology, epithelial stem cell, stem cell niches, I know about cancer stem cells, I know about stromal interactions, I have experience with different animal models (*disclaimer* I condone any kind of animal cruelty. Laboratory animals live in normal circumstances a happy life) and I am eager to prove myself.

Anyway I left after a brief talk about the state of science in my country, big institues that are being created now (like the Champalimaud foundation Centre for the Unknown) and the almost mandatory subject of public finances. Well they said that they would call me by the end of the week (liars!).

So I got the call this morning. it was a wake up call (9:06 - my new lucky number) and on the other end was a job offer. An offer that I gladly accepted :)

HIV cure with Stem cells? The Berlin Patient

To make clear from the start: what this study reports is (at this point) a Proof of Concept.

A number of factors need to be accounted for.

This was no simple: "here, drink this solution containing stem cells and you will be HIV free!"

The case of the Berlin Patient, an american citizen living in Berlin, was first reported in 2008 and now, 3 years down the line, there was a follow up of the case. This is still an amazing achievement in one particular patient.

The abstract from the paper (Allers et al; doi:10.1182/blood-2010-09-309591) (my comments in italic):

HIV entry into CD4+ cells requires interaction with a cellular receptor, generally either CCR5 or CXCR4.

(CD4 is a primary receptor used by HIV-1 to gain entry into host T cells; T cells play a major role in cellular immunity, being most effective in removing virus-infected cells, but also participates in defending against fungi, protozoans, cancers, and intracellular bacteria. It also plays a major role in transplant rejection)

We have previously reported the case of an HIV-infected patient in whom viral replication remained absent despite discontinuation of antiretroviral therapy after transplantation with CCR5Δ32/Δ32 stem cells.

(The patient stopped taking drugs for HIV after being transplanted with Bone Marrow Stem cells with mutation in CCR5, these cells are naturally resistant to infection by R5 HIV strains)

However, it was expected that the long-lived viral reservoir would lead to HIV rebound and disease progression during the process of immune reconstitution.

(Therefore the results were not expected)

In the present study, we demonstrate successful reconstitution of CD4+ T cells at the systemic level (i.e. in the blood stream) as well as in the gut mucosal immune system following CCR5Δ32/Δ32 stem cell transplantation, while the patient remains without any sign of HIV infection.

(one of problems of radiotherapy is that the immune system gets compromised, killing most, if not all, bone marrow stem cells, therefore impeding the production of new T cells. After transplantation "new bone marrow" the body is able to produce T cells again)

This was observed although recovered CD4+ T cells contain a high proportion of activated memory CD4+ T cells, i.e. the preferential targets of HIV, and are susceptible to productive infection with CXCR4-tropic HIV. Furthermore, during the process of immune reconstitution, we found evidence for the replacement of long-lived host tissue cells with donor-derived cells indicating that the size of the viral reservoir has been reduced over time. In conclusion, our results strongly suggest that cure of HIV has been achieved in this patient.

So this particular patient apart from being HIV infected, he also suffered from leukemia (blood cancer). He had received a 1st transplant of Bone Marrow stem cells and some time later the cancer came back (relapsed). He received a second transplant from a donor with that rare genetic mutation that conferred resistance to HIV (CCR5Δ32/Δ32). At this time he stopped antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV. Three year later (i.e. now) he seems to be cancer and HIV free.

The good things:

1) It shows that there is a way of erradicating (as it seems) the HIV infection. It shows that scientists are on the right path (but it is probably not the only one)

The not so good things:

1) Transplantation is a major thing (30% of patients die)

2) does it really pay to undergo transplantation when the HIV therapies available today can provide HIV patients with a life span up to 70-80 years?

3) About one in 100 Caucasian people have the mutation (CCR5Δ32/Δ32), finding a compatible match will extremely difficult.

4) (to my understanding) The mutation is only resistant to a strain of HIV.

5) Three years is still a very short time to make this a definite proof.

This is a life-threatening treatment as it is and the next step is to devise strategies to reduce the risks of such therapy. Companies and Research groups in the US are trying to manipulate the patients own stem cells to try therapies that are similar to the one given to the Berlin patient. At least with would reduced the host-graft rejection that tends to happen in normal transplantations.

Still very interesting (and IMHO much more the the As-Bacteria story...)

First was all the hype NASA created about something extraordinary, press releases etc (in science a very typical thing of a lot of smoke but little fire);

Then people wondered if it would be about a new life form or basically the admittance of life forms outside earth (aliens, area 51 etc);

Finally the paper came out and we could know more about the subject. (I have to admit here that I have not read the paper)

Beer butt Chicken!

So I bought a chicken today as I wanted to roast it.

I was going to do the usual recipe but then I remembered of beer butt chicken.

This is a recipe that receives very good feedback but that I never get round to try.

So hands on. I have losen the skin and rubbed the insides with a mix of a chicken cube, peper, chili powder, grated garlic, grated onion, olive oil and a bit of beer. Mixed the "mix" left over with half a can. Shoved the can up the chicken's arse and oven (175ºC for 1h and 15min more or less).

Will let you know later how it tastes but it does look good!!

btw it is served with baby potatos and chantenay carrots that were parboiled 10 and then roasted for another 10-15 min basted with the juices from the chicken...

Snowing in Nottingham in late November

It was a big surprise to find that it was snowing in the early hours of saturday.

Everything was white, and a lot of roads were also covered as the snowfall was not expected until Sunday night.

A landmark?

So I achieved one of the landmarks of my year. I have (finally) submitted my PhD thesis. This is not the end of the story as I still need to be assessed by a couple of people to become a fully qualified Doctor of Philosophy. I am felling like the Horse that just jumped the final hurdle and still needs to get to the finish line. But if I am the horse who the hell is ridding me? I suppose the examiners. So much for this brill analogy. Replace horse by runner or something like that. Like being awarded the penalty-kick, but I still need to score to capitalize all the hard work (or a dive if you are Liedson).

Anyway here is the front cover:

It means that now I need to start thinking what to do next. To start I have already sent an email to a company that I have visited last year. Kind of throwing the bate to the fish, in a good way. This bate analogy normally doesn't have a good connotation, because the Fisherman is trying to deceive the fish in going for the bate. The end of the deal for the fish is not exactly the one that the fish had anticipated... my analogies are really coming through very well (yes I could delete them but I like them anyway).

I already pulled a list of possible places to apply, both post-docs, positions in industry and ones that involve industry and academia. Quite a few different places: Budapeste, Jerusalem, Leuven, Barcelona, Edinburgh, Manchester, london, Madrid, another in Czech Rep, Greece, Singapore, a few more...

I also need to work on a paper to be submitted until the end of the month, that should be easy taken in consideration that all the info is probably in my thesis.

I might plan a visit to Portugal in the coming weeks (if Amy lets me go).

Maybe I will read a book, maybe I will buy Super Mario Galaxy 2, maybe I will learn the guitar, maybe I will learn a bit of web skills, maybe...

running fairbot on Mac OS X snow leopard

This tutorial was created from the post of AlistairH on its blog.

This will try to explain how to run fairbot, on a Mac OS X 10.6.X

You will need:

1. a copy of Crossover

2. a copy of Fairbot (I used the latest version)

3. a copy of some dll w$ XP libs, you can get them here. extract them to a temp folder on your desktop.

note: you can use the trial versions of crossover and fairbot.

STEP 1. install crossover

STEP 2. instal fairbot, through crossover. i.e.

open crossover -> Configure (on menu bar) -> install software ->

install unsupported software -> continue -> new bottle (name it Fairbot) -> create new bottle and continue ->

click install-> and locate fairbot.exe (that you got from 2.)

STEP 3. replace DLL

On crossover menu bar -> Configure -> manage bottles -> select Fairbot bottle -> advanced -> click "make this the default bottle" -> Open c: drive in Finder -> go to Windows/system32 folder -> drag and drop all files from the temp folder you created to the system32 folder. close folder.

STEP 4. override DLLs

On the manage bottles menu -> Control Panel -> launch winecfg ->

go to Libraries tab -> on the dropdown box type and add the following:

msxml3

shdocvw
shlwapi

-> Apply -> OK -> close Wine configuration -> close Manage bottles

STEP 4. add dll to registry

On crossover menu bar -> Programs -> Run Command... ->

(make sure fairbot bottle is select) -> Open Shell (it will open a Terminal Console) ->

run the following commands (one line at the time):

wine regsvr32.exe msxml3.dll
wine regsvr32.exe msxml4.dll
wine regsvr32.exe shdocvw.dll

Close all.

Now you are ready to run fairbot, via the programs tab on crossover, or just use spotlight to trigger fairbot.

put your betfair username and password and you are ready to roll.

Note. I have tried it and the only problem I could find with the software was on the graphs. When in ladder mode, after opening a graph, I could change the event only once, then I needed to close and open the graph again. i.e. if I open the graph for one horse, I could change the horse only one time.

Hope this would come in hand to some people.

Depois de 1 mês em terras lusas regressei (regressámos) ao Reino Unido.
A primeira paragem foi Bristol. O motivo: uma já há muito devida visita à familia Beedell.

Ainda que a visita tenha sido curta, achei Bristol um cidade interessante. Com um "ambiente" um pouco distinto do de Nottingham. Claro que as casas ainda são iguais, ainda há chavs etc etc, mas pareceu-me haver mais "identidade" e não apenas as mesmas lojas que se encontram em todas as cidades e vilas deste país. Para muito contribuiu a visita ao St. Nicks Market.
Visita obrigatória à ponte suspensa de Bristol, depois de uma viagem pelo canal.

Obrigado aos anfitriões pela boa hospitalidade. Na foto em baixo vemos Jonh B a abrir uma garrafa de Cidra cuja validade dizia Best before 1992. Verdade é que a cidra estava ainda boa (ninguém ficou com caganeira).

De regresso a Nottingham especialmente para o aniversário do leo. re-encontramos assim a "malta" toda numa só ocasião (nice!).

Agora há que pensar em perder uns quilitos, e escrever umas linhas da tese (já estou a dever muitas páginas a esta causa).

Como cereja no topo do bolo (aka fim de semana) recebi um email do boss a confirmar que fui aceite para uma comunicação oral no encontro da Sociedade Britânica de Gastroenterologia. Pois é agora é que vou ser "atirado" aos lobos! A ver se o mesmo acontece para a DDW2010 que vai ser em Maio em New Orleans (tava a tentar escrever em Português mas não me lembro como é). Mas isso é coisa para se descobrir só para o fim de Fevereiro!

Nota enófila

Desde que regressei a Portugal tenho bebido pelo menos um vinho tinto diferente por dia (já lá vão quase 30 dias). Embora não beba uma garrafa por dia, a média deve cifrar-se mais ou menos nesse valor :)

O que eu queria deixar aqui registado é a qualidade do vinho, fazendo claro uma comparação com o vasto mercado de consumo que encontro a maior parte do ano no Reino Unido.

Das garrafas que bebi poucas foram compradas acima dos 7 Euros (excepto os vinhos comprados à mesa do restaurante e uma ou outra garrafa mais carota. De facto a maioria dos vinhos deve estar entre os 3 e os 5 euros.

Uma outra curiosidade é que salvo uma ou outra excepção, comprei quase sempre vinhos que não conhecia (alguns admito que tinha os selos da selecion mondiale :P, um outro vinha recomendado pelo NYTimes).

Veredicto quase final: Não bebi nenhum vinho que me fizesse sequer pensar: este vinho é mais ou menos (normalmente quando isto vem à cabeça é sinal é mais de menos do que mais ou menos!!).

E sendo assim brindo aos vinhos portugueses! (hoje com um copinho da herdade do Enforcado!

O obrigatório Post de Fim de Ano.

Quem me conhece sabe que não desejo mal (por norma) a ninguém.

No entanto fica sempre bem desejar um Bom Fim de Ano e um excelente 2010 a todos. Espero que seja um ano marcante para todos (nem que seja pelo o número 2-0-1-0).
Para mim vai ser o ano que marca a passagem de uma vida académica que se tem pautado pela descontração do dia-a-dia, pela ausência de "alguma" responsabilidade, para provavelmente algo mais exigente. Será concerteza um ano interessante!

Acima de tudo divirtam-se, mas com juízinho!

Acabei de receber um tweet do Biological Science (@BiolSciNews) sobre um texto com o título "Responsibilities of 21st-Century Scientist" escrito por Thomas E. Lovejoy (aqui).

Gostei de ler este texto, fala sobre a responsabilidade dos Ciêntistas saberem comunicar a ciência de forma simples para o público em geral e também de forma concisa e relevante para "decision makers"

Cito: "We certainly have a responsibility to share knowledge with public officials and other leaders. Otherwise how can we possibly expect policies that logically derive from the work? That requires very different language, i.e., simple and straightforward, whereas our normal implication is to present things with great complexity with all kinds of ifs, buts and maybes."

Outro ponto que achei interessante, e que é uma coisa a que, embora para mim seja uma questão de idoneidade e de etica pessoal para outros não representam nada, tenho prestado especial atenção depois de ler o livro "Bad Science" (Ben Goldacre) e de seguir os seus blogues e tweets. Refiro-me não só aos investigadores que se baseiam em falácias e em falsos estudos ou estudos mal-feitos , como também aos criticos crónicos de tudo e mais alguma.

"Hobbits" are a New Human Species - According to the Statistical Analysis of Fossils

Homo floresiensis Not Diseased Sub-Population of Healthy Humans

Researchers from Stony Brook University Medical Center in New York have confirmed that Homo floresiensis is a genuine ancient human species and not a descendant of healthy humans dwarfed by disease. Using statistical analysis on skeletal remains of a well-preserved female specimen, researchers determined the “hobbit” to be a distinct species and not a genetically flawed version of modern humans. Details of the study appear in the December issue of Significance, the magazine of the Royal Statistical Society, published by Wiley-Blackwell.

In 2003 Australian and Indonesian scientists discovered small-bodied, small-brained, hominin (human-like) fossils on the remote island of Flores in the Indonesian archipelago. This discovery of a new human species called Homo floresiensis has spawned much debate with some researchers claiming that the small creatures are really modern humans whose tiny head and brain are the result of a medical condition called microcephaly.

Researchers William Jungers, Ph.D., and Karen Baab, Ph.D. studied the skeletal remains of a female (LB1), nicknamed “Little Lady of Flores” or “Flo” to confirm the evolutionary path of the hobbit species. The specimen was remarkably complete and included skull, jaw, arms, legs, hands, and feet that provided researchers with integrated information from an individual fossil.

The cranial capacity of LB1 was just over 400 cm, making it more similar to the brains of a chimpanzee or bipedal “ape-men” of East and South Africa. The skull and jawbone features are much more primitive looking than any normal modern human. Statistical analysis of skull shapes show modern humans cluster together in one group, microcephalic humans in another and the hobbit along with ancient hominins in a third.

Due to the relative completeness of fossil remains for LB1, the scientists were able to reconstruct a reliable body design that was unlike any modern human. The thigh bone and shin bone of LB1 are much shorter than modern humans including Central African pygmies, South African KhoeSan (formerly known as ‘bushmen”) and “negrito” pygmies from the Andaman Islands and the Philippines. Some researchers speculate this could represent an evolutionary reversal correlated with “island dwarfing.” “It is difficult to believe an evolutionary change would lead to less economical movement,” said Dr. Jungers. “It makes little sense that this species re-evolved shorter thighs and legs because long hind limbs improve bipedal walking. We suspect that these are primitive retentions instead.”

Further analysis of the remains using a regression equation developed by Dr. Jungers indicates that LB1 was approximately 106 cm tall (3 feet, 6 inches)—far smaller than the modern pygmies whose adults grow to less than 150 cm (4 feet, 11 inches). A scatterplot depicts LB1 far outside the range of Southeast Asian and African pygmies in both absolute height and body mass indices. “Attempts to dismiss the hobbits as pathological people have failed repeatedly because the medical diagnoses of dwarfing syndromes and microcephaly bear no resemblance to the unique anatomy of Homo floresiensis,” noted Dr. Baab.

Quando a cabeca nao tem juizo o corpo e que paga... ja dizia o barbeiro Antonio

Segunda feira corri a maratona!!!(de acordo com a wiki: A maratona é a mais longa, desgastante e uma das mais difíceis e emocionantes provas do atletissmo olímpico. Ela é disputada na distância de 42,195 km desde 1908)

Nao e que eu sejo do tipo atleta ou me esteja a tornar um. O que eu nao sou e capaz de ouvir alguem dizer, olhando nos olhos, que eu nao sou capaz!

Isso seja no que for... de pedir mais um pires de tremocos, de passar uma tarde ao sol na praia a olhar para miudas em bikini, ou correr uma maratona...

Muitas fotos foram tiradas pelos organizadores, e vao estar disponiveis brevemente. Segundo eles dizem vao estar tag’adas (mas que belo trocadilho sera possivel fazer com a palavra “tag” numa outra altura) com o numero do atleta, ou o numero do palerma que se pos a caminho (no meu caso 6941).

Funjada no Reino Unido

Ontem fui finalmente comer uma funjada. Foi feita com a fuba que os meus pais trouxeram de Angola.
O cozinheiro de serviço foi o Raul (que também cozinha no Iberian Delight). Estava realmente espetacular.

Isto para dizer que a conversa acabou por ser um pouco o mesmo quando se juntam pessoas que vieram de Portugal: O tempo, a Comida, as gajas que aqui são umas safadas, entre assuntos recorrentes do mesmo estilo.

Ficou a simpatia como fomos recebidos em casa do Raul e da Graça, e o sentimento que aquele jantar não era apenas entre nós. Aquele jantar juntou todos os meus familiares. Sim porque uma funjada é qause sempre sinónimo de familia. Esta soube particularmente bem porque foi feita nao com uma fuba qualquer, feita com uma fuba que não se compra no supermercado.

E hoje comi o resto ao almoço. Estar longe de casa, faz com que estes momentos tragam a casa a nós.

Depois de 6 meses a "sofrer" com uma lesao no tornozelo hoje resolvi marcar a consulta.

E para mim a coisinha boa dos centros de saude aqui. fui ás 10:30 marcar consulta e eles disseram: A proxima consulta disponivel é amanha ás 9:30. E eu: Ótimo! cá estarei.

E nao foi preciso passar a noite na fila (quem foi á marinha grande sabe do que eu estou a falar...)

De volta a Notts

Pois é de volta a Nottingham.

Estas férias valeram-me entre quatro e seis quilos a mais no lombo (sorte foi que nao tive que pagar excesso de peso!).

Como sempre e infelizmente nao dá para visitar todos... mas é sempre bom rever amigos e repetir antigos costumes.

No regresso a Nottingham passei por Edimburgo. Foram apenas umas horas mas dei uma voltinha no centro e fiquei com vontade de regressar.

Agora é tempo de pensar em acabar o PhD!

Boas meus caros amigos e devotos leitores (ocasionais) do U-ganda. (Ocasionais apenas e só porque os post sao feito nessa mesma frequencia!)

Já estou para escrever no blog há já algum tempo, mas o problema é sempre o mesmo - Preguica!

Anyways, pelo que podem ver pelo titulo o que vos trago hoje é... Música!

Fat Freddy's Drop - Quem os conhece sabe que eles tem um primeiro album que é um mimo (Based in True Story). Depois de uma "espera" de 4 anos eles lancaram o segundo album de nome "Dr Boondigga And The Big BW". o Album está disponivel para ouvir online (e para comprar também) no site do Amplifier.nz.

Tenho a dizer que já vi os FFD 2x em Nottingham e foi excelente. FFD foram uma recomendacao do Jonny (aka Botas d'agua) back in the 2006. O primeiro album rodou com muita frequencia quando fui de férias á Terra Mae em Maio desse mesmo ano e andei a passear o Algarve no Renault 5 que o Patricio caridosamente emprestou. O carro nao tinha rádio mas o SonyEricsson W800i fazias as vezes de autoradio! E é nisto que penso sempre que os oico :) Músicas que ficam ligadas ao um momento no tempo e no espaco. (Parando de divagar agora)

EASTER 09 (Ana and René visit)

Nesta Pascoa nao houve coelhinhos mas tivemos a visita da Ana Lúcia e do René.

De modo a aproveitar melhor as ferias e tambem para fugir um pouco á Inglaterra turistica, alugamos um carro (ai mae conduzir á esquerda!!!) e fomos visitar a avo da amy no "countryside". Fomos ao mar, e depois fomos a londres onde visitamos a familia Marcos que estava de visita na pascoa!
Ponto alto das festividades foi de em casa da avó da amy termo-nos cruzado com Paris. Voces estarao a pensar Paris a cidade, ou a Paris Hilton, mas nao. Paris é, segundo a criatura pq ainda n conseguimos encontrar o personagem no google, o filho da Princesa Donata, da familia real alema. Além disso é também o parceiro de Richard Quest (este consegue-se achar no google) um pivot da cadeia televisiva CNN! Infelizmente nao tiramos nenhuma foto com ele, mas ele brindou-nos com uma noite de histórias de cagar a rir, falou da mae e da realeza destituida, e das aventuras dos stalkers do Mr Quest!

“Vem lamber o teu gelado em Dublin”

Esta cabecinha não pára! (explicação um pouco mais à frente)

Como sabem (quem não sabia fica a saber), no fim do ano passado fui destacado (numa missão altamente secreta) para um pais solarengo (uiiiii que até queima) chamado Irlanda.
A missão é um perigoso e arriscado jogo de espionagem, contraespionagem e matraquilhos (sextas à noite a partir das 21:00).

No meu passaporte (falsificado pois está claro, mas ao nivel dos melhores originais) diz que sou Português e a minha carta profissional (tambem paguei para ter uma destas) diz que trabalho no ramo publicitario. Ambos os documentos permitem-me desempenhar minha missão de forma mais ou menos clandestina. Ser Português permite-me ser autorizado a beber até cair para o lado, e fingindo que trabalho (no ramo publicitario) faz com que o meu nome não seja detectado pelos serviços secretos Irlandeses.

É uma vida dupla e por vezes tripla dificil, e tenho de manter sempre as aparências. Tenho de beber uma bela jolas de vez em quando (tipo comprimidos para a tosse, 2 de 8 em 8 horas) e tambem de vez enquando tenho de ter uma ideia publicitaria brilhante.

A ultima devem estar recordados foi no ultimo natal em que fiz um (modestia à parte, brilhante) spot televisivo para a conceituada marca de pipocas “as saltitonas” em que envolvia duas protitutas russas, um saco de berlindes, duas pilhas e um pão de quilo.

Como esta cabecinha não pára (ver acima), ao ler este blogue tive uma ideia para uns outdoors para promover o turismo em particular na Irlanda e no geral em Dublin (mas que belo trocadilho):
Os outdoors vão ter adolescentes em trajes colegiais (como as duas fotos, no post abaixo) e frases em letras garrafais do tipo “Vem lamber o teu gelado em Dublin”, “em Dublin tambem se lambe”, “gostas pouco gostas” ou mesmo “o consumo regular de sopas aumenta o teu desempenho sexual”.

Portem-se mal

E cá vos espero em Dublin (uns dias com mais juizo, outros com um pouco menos lol)

Para quem acha que é um escandalo o preco das propinas em portugal e que nao há mal nenhum em ficar 7 anos a fazer cursos que deveriam ser de 3 e 4 anos.
Para quem acha um escandalo que se tenham que pedir emprestimos para ir para o ensino superior. vejam o caso das universidades Inglesas:

A moda dos Vouchers

Ok, nao se escreve mto nesta casa... feliz ou infelizmente ou porque nada de novo acontece (como é o caso) ou entao porque os colaboradores já nao colaboram.

Bom hoje resolvi escrever sovre uma trivialidade, coisas que acontecem diáriamente e que eu julgo que nao tem assim nada de extraordinário.

Bom (e lá me vem o Joao Lourenco á mente qdo inicio uma frase assim) voltando ao titulo do post - A moda dos Vouchers.

Nao se o mesmo se passa em portugal, mas aqui em England os vouchers de desconto sao uma febre. E nao julguem que é preciso ir buscar-los a qualquer lado, népias, eu tou a falar dos vouchers q basta imprimir e mostrar.
Talvez seja por causa do credit crunch (provavelmente) mas o que é facto é que existem milhentos sites que se dedicam a fazer o "apanhado" dos vouchers. Eu consulto este http://www.vouchercodes.co.uk/printable-vouchers.html.
Se forem la veem que praticamente é só restaurantes mas tambem se encontram de outras coisas (roupa electrodomesticos e outros mais).
Nada mau imprimir uma destas coisas e ter 50% de desconto na comida qdo se vai a um restaurante.

Como exemplo, este domingo fomos 5 pessoas almocar ao La Tasca (restaurante de tapas á lá nuestros hermanos). conta final 55£ - poupanca 40£. Nao tá mau :)

O que é um MoBrother? ok, um MoBrother é alguem que esta disposto a mostrar, debater e combater problemas dos homens, coisas como o cancro da próstata, cancro testicular ou deprssao masculina.

Todos os Movembros - antes conhecidos como Novembro - os MoBrothers deixam crescer um bigode bigodaça! daí o nome "Mo" de Moustache, Bigode em ingles! A ideia é fazer a barba no dia 1 de Movembro

Easy Star All Stars

Este post serve para relatar o ultimo concerto que tive o prazer de ver.
Na ultima terca Fui ver Easy Star All Stars, conhecidos principalmente por fazer dois albuns que sao covers completos um dos Radiohead (Radiodread) e outro um tributo aos Pink Floyd (Dub Side of the Moon).

Ah parte disso pouco mais sabia deles, fiquem bastante surpreendido, gostei imenso do concerto. Provavelemente alguns "puristas" vao dizer que eles "assassinaram" os originais e tal, eu acho que fizeram um trabalho brilhante. Mas isso sou eu que simplesmente adoro o reggae vibe.

Agora uma curiosidade... Nao quero passar a ideia de racista, mas neste concerto reggae os unicos pretos eram os membros dos Easy Star All Star, e mesmo assim em minoria :P. Ate a banda de suporte eram todos brancos...

Bom só para anunciar que estou de regresso a Nottingham.
O tempo é o tipico britanico, talvez o esperado para esta altura do ano: chuva e céu nebulado. Enfim...

Este ano tem de ser a doer (se isso é possivel). Um ano para recuperar 18 meses (incluindo a escrita da tese). A ver o que sai daqui. No meio de todas estas coisas há uma decisao: a letargia que foi iniciada há quase 3 anos estará a terminar. A melhor maneira de encarar isto (isto o phd) como um trabalho.

Trabalho
A palavra "trabalho" tem sua origem no vocábulo latino "TRIPALIU" - denominação de um instrumento de tortura formado por três (tri) paus (paliu). Desse modo, originalmente, "trabalhar" significa ser torturado no tripaliu.
